George Dixon-Davis (Chiqui) was born in Cuba. He studied under some of the most famous choreographers in Cuba, such as Rodolfo Reyes, Ramiro Guerra and Roberto Espinosa. He graduated as a dance pedagogue from the ministry of culture. Chiqui founded Grupo Patakin, one of the biggest dance company in the Cuban folklore tradition, and was its artistic director and choreographer for many years. For 20 years Chiqui worked as a dance teacher,choreographer and dancer at several companies, Nuevo Teatro y Danza, Grupo de Danza de Medicina and Grupo Kalunga, just to mention a few. Chiqui has been working with some of the really great Cuban artists, like the female singer Celina Gonzales, Omara Portuondo, Elena Burke and Celeste Mendoza, the singer Oscár D´León from Venezuela, the percussionists Los Papines, Tatagüines, and Pello el Afrokan, and orchestras like Irakere, Los Van Van, Orquesta Aragón, La Orquesta Jorrin and Sierra Maestra. He has received several prices an awards, for example as “Distinguished artist” at the Youth Festival in East Germany in 1974. At the annual carnival in Havanna in the years 1969-90 he received first or second prize for best choreography etc. |
